With us, you will develop your skills in ensemble playing, songwriting, music production, and studio techniques.
Band: Our school dedicates a lot of time to the band program, giving us plenty of opportunities to play together. This allows you to focus on developing your skills as a musician and working on the music you enjoy most—both solo and in a group. We offer individual instrumental lessons with highly qualified teachers. If you want to try out different instruments, you will have plenty of opportunities to do so. We work primarily by ear, but you will also receive an introduction to reading sheet music.
We hold many concerts throughout the year, and they are always among the year’s highlights. We play both covers and original songs. You also get to go on tour.
Studio: During studio sessions, you receive instruction in recording techniques, music production, mixing, and mastering. As a student in the music course, you will access to the music software Ableton Live 12 (Suite version). Over the course of the year, we will record an album in the studio—perhaps on vinyl?
Songwriting /Composition and theory: Our course provides you with a deeper understanding as both a performing musician and a songwriter. You will create your own songs and compositions under the guidance of an instructor, gaining knowledge of music theory through the creative process. While we encourage experimentation and exploration, we also teach traditional music theory, including ear training, harmony, and analysis. If you wish to pursue further music studies, you are in good hands with us.
Study trips London can be seen as the world capital of music. Here, you can experience high-quality concerts across a variety of genres, gathering ideas and inspiration for your own work. Later in the year, you will experience Berlin’s unique music scene. If something exciting is happening in Bergen or the surrounding area, we are always happy to make a spontaneous trip to a concert or festival.
You are most welcome to join us regardless of your musical background, even if you don’t know how to read music. You need to be sufficiently interested to follow our program (21 hours of instruction per week) and have the capacity to attend all classes; the class relies on your presence. You are also expected to practice in your own time so that you are well-prepared for lessons.

The Music subject has its own building featuring an auditorium, a studio, and band/practice rooms; we have a grand piano, a Fender Rhodes Mk.1, effects pedals and synthesizers, electric and acoustic guitars, basses, drum kits, and various amplifiers. Our facilities are open until 11 PM every evening, giving you plenty of opportunities to use them during your free time as well.
Bring your own instruments if you have them. A laptop is useful, but not required.
Should you have any questions regarding equipment or other matters, please feel free to contact Gjermund, a music teacher, via email at gjefre@gmail.com or on his mobile at 41201639.

Every year, we have a period of intensive cross-disciplinary work. This allows you to apply the skills and knowledge you have built up in a new context or delve deeper into a specific aspect of it.

Sunnhordland Folk High School offers many creative subjects, and we take the opportunity to engage in exciting projects and collaborations with the school’s artists, actors, and game developers. This allows you to apply your music and skills in a wide range of contexts, in addition to the music course’s own concerts.
