The Game Design course is the first of its kind at a Norwegian folk high school. We have many years of experience teaching game development at all levels. Several of our former students have gone on to work in the games industry, both in Norway and internationally.
Game Design is for anyone who loves games and is curious about creating vibrant, engaging gaming experiences. An experienced teacher will support you, guide you through the world of game development and teach you everything you need to make games.
Throughout the year, you will learn everything you need to make games. We start with the fundamentals of programming and design. Using this knowledge, we build our first 2D games, initially individually and then in groups. We also explore visual effects, sound and animation to create even better gaming experiences.
Through the year’s projects, you will learn how to plan the development process: taking an idea through to a finished product, writing design documents and making prototypes to test your ideas quickly and effectively. Between programming sessions and projects, we explore board games, role-playing games and strategy games to learn about systems and balance.
Our projects focus on teamwork in both small and large groups. You will put everything you learn about game development and design into practice. Collaboration extends beyond your own class, with several projects involving other subjects throughout the year. Game Art students create artwork and animation, while Game Music students create atmosphere, sound effects and music. Together, we make unique and engaging games.

We don’t just make video games. We also design Escape Rooms and LARPs (live-action role-playing games), as both are closely connected to game design and creating unforgettable experiences. You will learn to create quests, encounters and mysteries.
For each project, we publish the students’ games online. The two links below let you explore games made by our students from 2014 to the present. Projects range in length from three days to three weeks.

Throughout the year, you will collaborate with Game Art students on several projects to create games together, from short game jams to larger game projects. You will work together on each game’s concept, visual style and gameplay. As a Game Design student, you will program the game logic, design levels and challenges, write stories and organise production.
You will also collaborate with several of the school’s other programmes, whose students will contribute voice acting and music to the games you create.
